focus on gratitude

Tis’ the season for spending time with your family, friends and loved ones. The holidays also present an array of demands such as the pressure to be ‘merry and bright’, parties, shopping for gifts, baking, cleaning and entertaining. Unfortunately, this time of the year often brings an unwelcome guest in our lives, STRESS.

We are here to remind you that self-care is the most important gift you can give yourself because…YOU’RE WORTH IT! It’s not selfish to take time for yourself, even during the holidays. Here are some self-care tips on how to help minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays.

Start with gratitude
Find something to be thankful about in every situation. Rather than dreading your visit with distant relatives, be thankful you get to spend time with them to get to know them better. Instead of complaining about a neighborhood holiday open house, be thankful you have such wonderful neighbors. When your mind goes towards a negative, find a way to flip it around.

Plan ahead for self-care
Set aside time for yourself every day, even if it’s just half an hour where you can enjoy a relaxing activity, such as a bubble bath, yoga, reading a book or watching your favorite Christmas movie. Don’t have 30 minutes? Spending just 15 minutes alone without distractions can help clear and refresh your mind too! Some options may include taking a walk without any electronics or listening to some of your favorite Christmas songs.

Just say ‘No’
Don’t feel obligated that you need to attend every party or dinner you are invited to. Being overscheduled is stressful. It’s ok to be mindful of your own needs such as having your own downtime.

Don’t abandon healthy habits
It’s the time of the year when good health habits seem to go out the window. Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to stress. Get plenty of sleep. Eat a nutritious snack before an event so you don’t overdo it. Incorporate regular physical activity into each day, even if it’s just taking your dog for a quick walk!

Self-care looks different for everyone, so choose something that you know will make you feel good. With a little planning and self-care, you will find peace and joy during the holidays! Merry Christmas!
